AFC Liverpool 2 v 0 Oldham Town – Match Result
AFC Liverpool returned to winning ways in a 2-0 victory over Oldham Town; this was an important league victory for the reds who had been knocked out of the FA Vase the previous week.
Derek Goulding kept the same formation that he had used in the two previous games although choosing to alter the personnel on duty. The strong presence of Tod Bamber unfortunately missing last week made a difference here and he was rewarded with two well taken goals in the latter stages of the game.
The first half was an even affair with both teams having their moments and share of the ball. As ever we saw the deliberate passing game of AFC Liverpool as they tried to break down another stubborn defence wheras the visitors used the long ball tactic quite often to seek out their dangerous fast forward Nsimbe. The reds defenders superbly marshalled by captain Liam Coyne stood firm throughout, and on the odd occasion the visitors advanced through them they were thwarted by the several brilliant saves from Paul Willis.
Despite being injured recently Coyne continues to be ever present and a dominant figure in the reds team; he shows his leadership skills often by quickly cooling situations when required when frustrations run over; he is always the captain who leads by example.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first until the 70th minute when the ever willing Thurston found Bamber on the edge of the area with a telling pass. Bamber hit home the opening goal to the relief of the home crowd with a crisp shot. Although various substitutions broke up the remainder of the game it was certainly AFC Liverpool’s best spell as they sought a second goal. This duly came in the last minute when the ball fell to Bamber after Ojapah had worried the defence and again the ball was dispatched home.
The reds were worth this win although the victory was somewhat overshadowed by a bad injury to Joe Evans; a particularly bad tackle on him by Oldham substitute O’Sullivan went unpunished by referee Worthington. This was a mystery of the game how players could be booked for nothing more than little shoves when this sort of tackle has no censure. Whilst O’Sullivan and Worthington made their way home Joe Evans unfortunately was still sitting in the dressing room at least ninety minutes after the game had finished for an ambulance to take him to hospital. Hopefully the injury is not as serious as it looked and he can return to playing as soon as possible to continue the fine form he has displayed so far this season.
