AFC Liverpool 5 – 0 Daisy Hill

Two goals from Jack Sinnott and one each from Aaron Stafford, Steven Jones and Joseph Gibbons saw AFC Liverpool record their biggest win of the season against Daisy Hill.

It was an even handed opening fifteen minutes, with Aaron Stafford being denied by Daisy Hill keeper Craig Holmes whilst at the other end Lee Scanlon saw his header come back off the bar.

With the match shaping up to be an intriguing contest, both sides were reduced to ten men as an off the ball clash saw River Humphries and Darrell Gavin being given their marching orders. Following the tactical reshuffles, it was AFC Liverpool who exploited the extra space with more success and from then on they always looked the more likely to emerge as the victors.

The breakthrough came on twenty two minutes. Darren Torpey broke from inside his own half and fed the ball to Karl Gornell down the channel. The Red’s winger had the presence of mind to look up and he cut the ball back to Jones, who from the edge of the area, miscued his first time shot. Fortunately for the Reds though, it fell into the path of Aaron Stafford who had a simple tap in from five yards.

The goal scorer had another good chance to extend the home side’s lead when he was played through by Jones and one on one with the keeper, was denied by the foot of Holmes.  Daisy Hill meanwhile were reduced to long range efforts from Scanlon and Paul Bridge, whose daisy cutter direct free kick had Jack Baker at full stretch.

Into the second half it was still AFC Liverpool who were creating the better chances. Gornell’s shot from the corner of the six yard box was saved by Holmes and then from the rebound, Aaron Stafford’s overhead kick was cleared off the line. The Red’s striker was then once again denied by Holmes as he pounced on a shot after a Steve Corris free kick came all the way through to Stafford.

It was Gibbons who finally claimed the second goal on sixty three minutes when he rose unchallenged to meet a deep Torpey cross, heading back across goal into the opposite corner.

The visitors had two great opportunities to get back into the match but Damon Clynes shot wide from six yards and then from a little further out wasted a free header. Shortly afterwards Sinnott rose unchallenged to meet a Steve Corris corner, to claim his second goal in as many matches.

With the points in the bag, Jones, back in the line-up after missing the two previous matches, added to his season’s tally when his left footed curling shot from the right hand edge of the box nestled in the top left corner.

As the match was drawing to a conclusion a long punt down into the corner by Luke Davies was chased down by Shaun Chart and after getting the better of a tussle with Kyle Hynes, the Reds’ striker broke into the area before being hauled down by the Daisy Hill defender. Jones stepped up to take the spot kick but saw his effort saved by Holmes and then the keeper blocked Jones’s second attempt. With the ball loose, a feeble attempt at a clearance from Marc Shemwell rebounded against Jones’ shins, hit the post and landed at the feet of Sinnott, who from a yard out had the simplest of tap ins.
